Abstract This field study conducted by Hebl, King, Glick, Singletary, and Kazama in 2006 was done to determine the different types of emotional responses to pregnant versus non-pregnant women in different customary and non-customary roles. The volunteers wore false pregnant stomachs while applying for jobs and shopping in large retail stores in a shopping mall. The study was trying to determine if pregnant women would receive more compassionate treatment if they were setup in a traditional role such as shopping as opposed to a pregnant woman who tried to interview for a welding job. The idea was that the pregnant women would receive a more kind response if they were in need of help with an item as opposed to filling out an application for employment (Hebl, et al. , 2006). Forward Throughout history the word pregnancy has conjured up feelings of fragility and delicateness. These types of views gave birth, no pun intended, to many beautiful paintings such as Picasso’s â€Å"Mother and Child† or Modersohn-Becker’s â€Å"New Mother†. When someone says the word, â€Å"Mother†, one does not immediately think of a sales associate or an advertising executive. However, the study found that ambivalent sexism was the cause of the difference in the ways the pregnant women, who were trying to gain employment, were being viewed and treated. Ambivalent sexism states that a man will feel a greater hostility to women that challenges the traditional by evening the playing field, such as career women or feminists (Glick amp; Fiske, 1996, 2001). Hypothesis The hypothesis for this study was that pregnant (versus non pregnant) women would receive a more benevolent attitude and response when they acted out the traditional role and likewise that the pregnant (versus non-pregnant) women would receive a more hostile response if they were to e ngage in non-traditional roles such as seeking employment. The role manipulation was completed by having visibly pregnant versus non pregnant volunteers apply for jobs that were not traditional versus acting as simple customers. They also expected that the pregnant women applying for jobs would encounter more hostility than both the non-pregnant and the pregnant shoppers. Study 1 The first study did not test the pregnant women in a variety of both traditional and non-traditional jobs so therefore they conducted a second study in which they did observe the reaction towards the pregnant women in non-traditional job applicant positions. In study 1, they used 93 female and 17 male employees in a large shopping mall. Sixteen women from the University of Texas, between the ages of 20 and 32 years old stood in as the pregnant and non-pregnant volunteers. They used some many women so that there was no discrimination within race or appearance. These sixteen women were coupled with five men and ten additional women to act as observational observers. Each set of woman/observer went into between four and fourteen different stores. The volunteers engaged in one hundred and ten interactions, forty-three times they acted as women seeking employment and sixty-seven times as customer. In addition to all of this there were six coders, who listened to tapes of the interactions, 14 tapes where inaudible. These six coders had no idea what was being studied or to what ends the data would be used for. Procedure The volunteers and observers where given training and in the case of the females who would act pregnant, made to wear the pregnancy prosthesis until they were comfortable. The females volunteer was told to deliver a script in a certain fashion while the observers were told to keep to themselves to respond politely and then position themselves in a way that they could inconspicuously watch the female volunteer. The stores chosen had to have at least fifteen employees due to the Americans with Disability Act of 1990 they are held to different standards then stores with fewer employees. Merchandise stores were also chosen over commercial stores. As stated in Study 1 intro, the female volunteers where to carry purses with a tape recorder inside to provide audio feedback of the reactions. Before the study began there was a pregnancy manipulation done in which a woman wearing a business suit, wedding band and a pregnancy prosthesis that made her to look around six to seven months pregnant were photographed along with a woman wearing the same attire minus the pregnant belly apparatus. The pictures where then given to independent raters and asked to describe the picture of the woman wearing the pregnancy apparatus. All of the raters said that the woman looked to be around six and half months along in her pregnancy. The women who posed as pregnant women were told to ask a set of questions once they had identified the store’s manager such as â€Å"May I fill out an application? † or â€Å"Do you have any positions available? † This was for the non-traditional role but for the traditional role they were told to simply go into the store acting as customers, asking for assistance in finding a birthday gift and then following up with a separate question in selection before leaving the store. In both circumstances the females were instructed to go directly to a comment card and fill it out about the experience. Likewise, the observer was told to wait two minutes to see if the employees spoke about the female then they too were told to go fill out a similar comment card. Results The data collected was evaluated with a seven point Likert-type scale alternating from 7 meaning very much and one meaning not at all. For perceived hostility, seven things were picked out and rated as well as, eight perceived benevolence things. Among the examples of these two different responses ranged from rudeness to over eagerness. The result of all this was that pregnant women received a higher divided response of hostility or benevolence. The pregnant participants acquired more aggressive attitudes and responses when seeking employment or pursued a non-traditional role and they also gathered more compassionate reactions when assuming the traditional role of a customer. Now, an equal amount of benevolence was received between the non-pregnant job applicants as pregnant shoppers, this was explained in the study as being in part to the manager needing to hire new employees as much as (s)he needs to make sales (Hebl, et al). The need for a second study was that there was a methodological limitation or hindrance in the first study and it was that the participants and the observers where aware of the experimental conditions. This was necessary but it did keep the study from being as true to life as the scientist would have liked. However, the first study did use inconspicuous procedures and lifelike explanations. Because the results were not as accurate as the scientist wanted they tweaked the experiments and staged a second study. The first study did test across a wide range of job positions because most retail establishments hire mostly women and have little worry about the cost of training or their turn-over rate. Conclusion The methods used in these studies (the wedding bands, the business suit attire, etc. ) while keeping the identities unbiased, did not test for things such as hostility towards pregnant women who did not have on a wedding ring or an applicant who was not wearing the proper attire. Should these things have been done, the study would have been more related to women in general and not women in the right circumstances with the right attire. In today’s world with the age of females getting pregnant becoming younger and younger the need for those same females to then seek employment to support said child after pregnancy is also rising. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention or CDC reported in the year 2010 that in that year there were 367,752 infants born to women between the ages of fifteen and nineteen years of age (CDC, 2010). While this was a 9% decrease; it was still an alarmingly high rate. Given the statics it would make more sense for this study to be redone to fit today’s culture by introducing the above stated variables. Furthermore, the site and circumstances should be changed to offer a wider array of situations. For example, going outside of the shopping mall for job interviews, as well as, shopping situations would render far more significant results. Almost everyone has been behind a young woman with a WIC voucher and has observed the rolled eyes, heated tones and general annoyance of not only the cashier but also the people waiting in line around the woman. This would be a better study of pregnant versus non-pregnant hostility or benevolence. There are many wonderful things that could be helped, improved and worked on as a result of this study. One thing that could be improved with the information in this study is the way managers train their employees to handle and help pregnant women. In almost every workplace these days there are many training videos, manuals, seminars and even pamphlets on how to deal with anything from problem customers to potential shoplifters. If the companies applied the information gleaned from this study then they would be able to apply it to their customer service techniques and better their responses to not only pregnant customers but also female job applicants. Another thing that could be improved upon using the information in this study would be the way business accommodate pregnant women. Companies such as Babies R Us © and Toys R Us © now have â€Å"mother’s only parking† much like handicap parking, these spaces are right next to the entrance of the store and keep expecting mothers from having to walk from a farther parking space. Much in the same way these stores have changed their way of thinking perhaps because of this study, other stores will follow suit, so to speak, and take into account that pregnant women have special circumstances for which they must make provisions for. A much more true to life application for the results of this study would be for companies to use the information to write better advertising ads that promote their policies on women friendly services. Osmotic Pressure and Tonicity Osmotic pressure and tonicity often are confusing to people. Both are scientific terms pertaining to pressure. Osmotic pressure is the pressure of a solution against a semipermeable membrane to prevent water from flowing inward across the membrane. Tonicity is the measure of this pressure. If the concentration of solutes on both sides of the membrane is equal, then there is no tendency for water to move across the membrane and no osmotic pressure. The solutions are isotonic with respect to each other. Usually, there is a higher concentration of solutes on one side of the membrane than the other. If youre unclear about osmotic pressure and tonicity it might because youre confused about how the difference between diffusion and osmosis. Diffusion Versus Osmosis Diffusion is the movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to one of lower concentration. For example, if you add sugar to water, the sugar will diffuse throughout the water until the concentration of sugar in the water is constant throughout the solution. Another example of diffusion is how the scent of perfume spreads throughout a room. During osmosis, as with diffusion, there is a tendency of particles to seek the same concentration throughout the solution. However, the particles may be too large to cross a semipermeable membrane separating regions of a solution, so water moves across the membrane. If you have a sugar solution on one side of a semipermeable membrane and pure water on the other side of the membrane, there will always be pressure on the water side of the membrane to try to dilute the sugar solution. Does this mean all of the water will flow into the sugar solution? Probably not, because the fluid may be exerting pressure on the membrane, equalizing the pressure. As an example, if you put a cell in fresh water, the water will flow into the cell, causing it to swell. Will all of the water flow into the cell? No. Either the cell will rupture or else it will swell to a point where the pressure exerted on the membrane exceeds the pressure of the water trying to enter the cell. Of course, small ions and molecules may be able to cross a semipermeable membrane, so solutes such as small ions (Na, Cl-) behave much like they would if simple diffusion were occurring. Hypertonicity, Isotonicity, and Hypotonicity The tonicity of solutions with respect to each other may be expressed as hypertonic, isotonic or hypotonic. The effect of different external solute concentrations on red blood cells serves as a good example for a hypertonic, isotonic and hypotonic solution. Hypertonic Solution or Hypertonicity When the osmotic pressure of the solution outside the blood cells higher than the osmotic pressure inside the red blood cells, the solution is hypertonic. The water inside the blood cells exits the cells in an attempt to equalize the osmotic pressure, causing the cells to shrink or create. Isotonic Solution or Isotonicity When the osmotic pressure outside the red blood cells is the same as the pressure inside the cells, the solution is isotonic with respect to the cytoplasm. This is the usual condition of red blood cells in plasma. Hypotonic Solution or Hypotonicity When the solution outside of the red blood cells has a lower osmotic pressure than the cytoplasm of the red blood cells, the solution is hypotonic with respect to the cells. Early in the story Little Red Riding Hood by Charles Perrault, Little Red told the wolf exactly where her sick grandmother lives. She lives beyond the mill you can see over there, in the first house you come to in the village (34). This evidence exposes Little Reds innocence. By not knowing any better, she breaks the rule of Never talk to strangers. She told the unknown, dangerous wolf where her vulnerable grandmother lives. The wolf then took the opportunity that Little Red Riding Hood has given him to race to grandmothers house and eat the poor sick grandmother before Little Red has the chance to arrive and aid her. Because of Little Reds innocence, the wolf was able to take advantage of her. Leading to consequences she has to face. Later on in the tale, Little Red shows her another example of innocence when she arrives to her grandmothers house in the Little Red Riding Hood by Charles Perraults version of the fairy tale. The wolf had already eaten the grandmother and disguised himself by wearing her clothes. Little Red Riding Hood heard the hoarse voice of the wolf and thought that her grandmother must have caught a cold (34). This provides evidence that Little Red did not remember the wolfs voice after Just talking to him earlier that same day. By being to childish and innocent, she did not play close attention and not taking in consideration that the wolf is dangerous and should be cautious when coming into contact with. Since she was careless, the wolf tricks Little Red into thinking he was her grandmother. Since she failed to remember his voice one, this resulted in the wolf successfully tricking her for a second time. In a different version of the tale Little Red Cap by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm Little Red is too innocent to realize the door was surprisingly open already, giving her a gut feeling that something was wrong. She was surprised to find the door open, and when she stepped into the house she had such a strange feeling that she said to herself: My goodness, Im usually so glad to see grandmother. Why am I frightened today? (36). She ignored these unusual signs and went into the house with no suspension rather than being alert of danger. Since she was not alert and aware, she kept her two characteristics of being innocent and unintelligent strong. She was too innocent to think that something was wrong and to proceed with caution. In addition, she lack intelligence by not realizing that her gut was telling her something was different and to be more careful while entering grandmoth ers house. In the ersion Little Red Cap by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm she did not have the knowledge of the wolf being a wicked beast and should be cautious when interacting with a wolf. But Little Red Cap didnt know what a wicked beast he was so she wasnt afraid of him. (36). This proves to the reader that Little Red Cap did not have the knowledge of the wolf being a force to reckon with. Her unintelligence blinded her to obtain the knowledge to know how wicked the wolf is. Resulting in the wolf being able to abstract information of Little Reds grandmother location and being able to eat the sick grandmother. Little Red revels her lack of intelligence in the story Little Red Cap by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. She fails to see the wolf disguised as her grandmother by wearing her grandmothers clothing. Then she put on her clothes and her nightcap, lay down in the bed, and drew the curtains. (36). Little Red fails to recognize that the wolf is not her grandmother and is deceiving her. She should have noticed a difference between a hairy animal that is much larger than a sick old grandmother. In result of Little Red not being able to tell that it was a wicked beast, she was dealt the same fate as her grandmother. In addition, throughout all versions of Little Red Riding Hood, she asks the wolf, who she believes is her grandmother, questions. For example in the story Little Red Riding Hood by Charles Perrault she asks, Grandmother, what big ears you have! All the better to hear you with, my dear (35) or Grandmother, what big arms you have! All the better to hold you with, my dear (35). Little Red calls out the obvious traits that divide the differences of physical appearance between a human and a wolf. By not being able to tell the difference between a wolf and a grandmother proves the lack of intelligence that Little Red has. In result of her lack of intelligence, she also is gobbled up by the wolf, just like her sick grandmother. In conclusion to all the evidence collected from the different versions of Little Red Riding Hood, evidence proves that the combination of Little Reds traits caused the outcome of the fairy tale versus a single trait causing the scenario to form. The Right Stuff - What is the Stuff? As might be expected from the title, The Right Stuff is centered on the concept of having the right stuff. Author Tom Wolfe uses several recurring techniques and comparisons to describe this idea and its relationship to the men who took part in the Mercury program. An opening chapter of the book is devoted to the "right stuff" in order to explain the concept to the reader. In this chapter, Wolfe makes a clear distinction between the right stuff and simple bravery. He tells the reader that a possessor of the right stuff can not only risk his life. He "should have the ability to go up in a hurtling piece of machinery and put his hide on the line and then have the moxie, the reflexes, the experience, the coolness, to pull it back in the last yawning moment" (19). One critic interprets the distinction as being "between the actual experience of the right stuff- of being a fighter pilot and experiencing, for example, night landings on an aircraft carrier- and any prior effort to describe that experience in language" (Marowski and Matuz 419). In the same chapter, the reader is also introduced to an element which recurs throughout the rest of the book. The author compares a career in flying to the climbing of a ziggurat, an extraordinarily high and steep pyramid. In an especially vivid passage he writes: "the idea was to prove at every foot of the way up that pyramid that you were one of the elected and anointed ones who had the right stuff and could move higher and higher and even-ultimately...be able to join the very Brotherhood of the Right Stuff" (19 ). Through this pyramid the world is divided into those who had the stuff and those were just left behind. Another characteristic of the right stuff is the pilots' relationship with one another. These pilots seem to always want to associate only with one another. Wolfe shows the reader the pilots' belief that only other pilots can understand their daily life and death struggles. In their discussions, though, it is shown that the pilots never like to use words like "danger," "bravery," and "fear." Instead they use a special code or explain by example.

In Of Mice and Men, we see various different sides of Curley’s wife. We are first introduced to her near the beginning of the book and she plays a big role towards the conclusion of the book. Her flirtatious character leads to her being killed by Lennie, in a confused state. Candy, the old swamper, introduces us to Curley’s wife during his first discussion with George and Lennie. Candy tells them that Curley’s wife is a â€Å"tart†. The fact that Curley’s wife is introduced to us with having â€Å"the eye† tells us that she is very flirtatious with other men in the ranch despite having a husband (Curley). The fact that we, the readers, are introduced to Curley’s wife through malicious rumours means that already the reader has a negatively biased opinion on Curley’s wife and women in general at those times. Curley’s wife is first physically introduced to us in the doorway of the bunkhouse where George and Lennie are at, asking for the whereabouts of her husband. She is described as wearing â€Å"a cotton house dress and red mules† which had â€Å"bouquets of red ostrich feathers† on the insteps. In the description of Curley’s wife’s clothes the colour red is repeated and emphasized many times. Red is often referred to as the colour of love and passion, which further emphasizes her sexual and flirtatious personality. Also the â€Å"bouquets of red ostrich feathers† on her insteps would have probably been very expensive at the time of the Great Depression and the fact that she wears them in the middle of a dusty and dirty environment where they could easily be ruined tells us that she is desperate to catch the attention of the workers and to also impress them despite having a husband, further emphasizing her character as a â€Å"tart†. Curley’s wife is hated by the ranch workers . When she enters the room of Crooks, Candy and Crooks are â€Å"scowling down away from her eyes†. This tells us that they are either afraid of of Curley’s wife or that they are aware of the fact that anything involving Curley’s wife can bring no good. Either way  the use of the word â€Å"scowling† tells us that the presence of Curley’s wife displeases Crooks and Candy. This tells us that all of the ranch workers dislike Curley’s wife as they know that there will be trouble if they ever speak to her. Curley’s wife is not only described as being flirtatious but she is also shown to be cruel at times. Since Crooks and Candy keep ignoring her she gets frustrated and explodes when Crooks stands up for himself by saying threatening comments like â€Å"I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain’t even funny†. This causes Crook to realize his place in society and causes him to become very weak. This tells us that at the time the words of a white woman were superior to that of a black man. This also emphasizes the amount of racism during the Great Depression. During the same scene, you start to see a new side of Curley’s wife and start to see the loneliness she feels. We see this when Curley†s wife says to Crooks, Candy and Lennie saying that she is talking to â€Å"a bunch of bindle stiffs†¦ an’ likin’ it because they ain’t nobody else†. This makes us understand the reason why she acts flirtatiously around the ranch workers. This is because she feels lonely as she is the only woman on the ranch and even though she has a husband he barely spends any time at home or with her. This shows that even though Curley’s wife married Curley, he thinks of her as nothing more than an object. Curley’s wife’s last appearance has a big impact on how we see her. While the other ranch worker’s were playing horseshoe, Curley tells Lennie about the time which could have changed her life totally. She tells him that she could have been â€Å"in the movies†. In this line Steinbeck uses very clever irony. The fact that she wants to be under the spot light is unrealistic as all she ever does is cast shadows on herself and attract negative attention. Although, Lennie is not very interested in her stories, we learn about the true presonality of Curley’s wife, her innocence and her desperate need to escape the situation she is in. At the scene of her death her pure personality is emphasized. This is  conveyed to us when her face is described as being â€Å"sweet and young† and that her â€Å"ache for attention was all gone for her face†. The word ‘ache’ tells us that Curley’s wife’s desperate need for attention was so strong that it began to hurt her. When she dies she is no longer potrayed in a negative light but is instead shown in a very positive light. When she dies also the atmosphere in the ranch changes. This is shown to us when in the book it says the â€Å"sun streaks were high on the walls† and the barn was light again. This could be that John Steinbeck is trying to use pathetic fallacy by trying to tell us that the positive change in the weather reflect the positive changes in the mood and appearance of Curley’s wife. Despite all the positive changes in her personality there are lots of different things that made her death inevitable. We see this when even though Lennie says he likes petting soft things and that most of the things he pets dies she still lets Lennie touch her hair. This tells us that her never ending want for attention, in the end, foreshadowed her death and ultimately lead to it. We can see that the reason for Curley’s wife’s hostility towards the ranch workers is because of constant betrayals from them (eg. Curley because he married her but never showed any signs of affection towards her.) and because her needs for attention weren’t met. To Curley, Curley’s wife is just a trophy which he shows off to people. The fact that her real name is never mentioned tells us that people on the ranch showed no signs of interest in Curley’s wife. The fact that she lives in the boss’s house and that she is married to the boss’s son makes her a woman of power even though she is treated as one of the lowest in the hierarchy of people at the ranch in terms of freedom and rights. This loneliness causes Curley’s wife to make people who are in a low position feel worse so that she feels more important, powerful and authorative. We see this when she enters Crooks room and says â€Å"They left all the weak ones here†. This tells us that she thinks that she is superior to Crooks, Candy and Lennie even though Steinbeck doesn’t give her the dignity of having a name. In conclusion, I think that even though she is a complicated and cruel character sometimes, she never planned on or thought herself to be a flirtatious person. Even though she often acted like one, there were hints telling us why she was acting this way and that her real personality was nenver clearly shown.
